Percodan addiction is caused by long term intake of the prescription painkiller
Percodan®, which is the brand name for the combination of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and oxycodone. Percodan® works this way: its oxycodone component binds to the pain receptors in the brain so that the sensation of pain is reduced, while acetylsalicylic acid in the formula halts the production of prostaglandins which otherwise cause pain.
Percodan®, which is prescribed for moderate to moderately severe pain,
is available in tablet, capsule, and liquid form and is taken every 6 hours
by mouth. Care must be taken to follow the doctor's instructions, as Percodan
addiction can happen easily. Oxycodone can be habit forming and Percodan
addiction can occur from taking a larger dose, or take it more frequently,
or for longer than the doctor has prescribed.
Since oxycodone’s FDA approval in 1995, the illegal use of painkillers such as Percodan® has increased significantly.
