MS Contin addiction is caused by long term intake of MS Contin®, the brand
name for morphine sulfate which is prescribed for moderate to severe pain.
Morphine sulfate, which is highly addictive, binds to the pain receptors
in the brain so that the sensation of pain is reduced. MS Contin®, like
other prescription painkillers, should be taken under the careful guidance
of a physician to avoid MS Contin® addiction. An estimated 1.6 million
Americans used prescription-type pain relievers non-medically for the first
time in 1998. This represents a significant increase since the 1980s, when
there were generally fewer than 500,000 new users per year.
