Hydrocodone addiction is on the rise in the U.S. as sales and
production have increased significantly in recent years—nearly
400% between 1990 and 2000—along with diversion and illicit
use. Currently, about 20 tons of hydrocodone products are used
annually in the United States. Generally, this drug is abused by
oral rather than intravenous administration.
Hydrocodone, a
morphine-like antitussive (anti-cough) agent, is the active
ingredient in prescription painkillers that include the trade names
Anexsia®, Hycodan®, Hycomine®, Lorcet®, Lortab®,
Tussionex®, Tylox®, Vicodin®, and Vicoprofen®.
Hydrocodone is an analgesic opiate used to treat mild pain and
reduce coughing. Closely linked to Morphine, it is available in
tablet or syrup form, and a dose of 15mg (1/4 gr) of Hydrocodone
is now considered equivalent to 10mg (1/6 gr) of Morphine.
